Interview Tips
Pre-Interview
Be Prepared!
Research the company where you are interviewing. Educate
yourself about the company’s services and products.
Be sure to ask your recruiter the following company
information:
- Web Site
- Size – How many employees?
- Public or Private standing.
- Age of company.
- Name and title of the person to ask for.
- Address, telephone number, and directions to the
company.
- Job description and title of open position.
- Interview schedule.
Do a practice drive to the company site if you are not
familiar with the location. Pick out appropriate business attire the night before the
interview. Prepare potential questions to ask the interviewer.
Portfolio Preparation
Run through your portfolio and samples to re-familiarize
yourself with your completed work.
Be sure that you are able to give the following information on
each piece of work:
- The company and year the work was done.
- The intended audience of the work.
- The context of the work; developed from scratch or re-
write.
- Be familiar with the type of sources used to complete
the work (that is, Functional Specs and Engineers).
- The tools used to develop the documentation.
Make extra copies of your best and most pertinent work and
offer to leave with the interviewer.
Include at least one copy of your resume and a list of
references in your portfolio.
Make sure you know what type of references your past
employers will give you.
The Interview
- Smile.
- Make eye contact and shake hands with the interviewer.
- Have good posture. Don’t slouch!
- Listen. Answer questions directly.
- Prove to the interviewer why you are a fit for the job.
- Prove what you can contribute to the group and company.
- Offer to present your portfolio.
- Express your interest for the job and company.
- Leave the interview on a positive note. Thank the
interviewer for the opportunity to interview.
Post Interview
- Give feedback to your recruiter ASAP.
- Send thank you notes to all the interviewers.
Failing the Interview
- Do not discuss salary, benefits, and possible perks on the first interview. Refer all salary and benefits questions to
your recruiter.
- Do not air your present employer’s dirty laundry. Never bad
mouth anyone, past or present!
- Do not call the company for feedback. Your agency recruiter
will get you feedback and the next step in the process.
